190x140mm &nbsp; “The year 1250 is when the facial stereotype of the Jew, as the modern world came to know it, was developed. This stereotype became so fixed that artists began to realise they didn’t need to label the figure a Jew anymore because people knew this is the “Jewish face.” – Sara Lipton, medieval historian “Antisemitism works not as a virus or poison, as in so many formulations, but rather, as a reservoir of readily available images and ideas that subsist in our political culture.”&nbsp; – The Political Quarterly,&nbsp;Ben Gidley, Brendan McGeever, David Feldman &nbsp; The visual stereotype of the Jew that emerged in the Middle Ages&nbsp;often&nbsp;depicted Jews as repulsive&nbsp;and&nbsp;despicable, and&nbsp;made them&nbsp;instantly identifiable. Deployed to warn&nbsp;Christians about the dangers of rejecting Christianity, these physiognomic caricatures – a precursor to eugenics and scientific racism – became a significant factor in the dissemination and promulgation of attitudes rather than a mere reflection of them.&nbsp; &nbsp; Esther Gabrielle Kersley’s&nbsp;Icons&nbsp;are created from found anti-Jewish images collected by the artist over five years from a wide range of sources spanning 1312 to the present day. The process of disassembling these troubling yet familiar images, which are then reconfigured into three-dimensional collage reliefs, examines how the past continues to influence the present. Over the centuries, these visual tropes have endured across time and place, becoming pervasive shadow images that are part of our cultural landscape. While the source images reflect the non-Jewish gaze and the power of the mythical Jew that has taken on a life of its own, Kersley’s distortion of these image responds to the ways in which they have also entered the Jewish imagination. the world. In the Holocaust (1941-1945), approximately 90% of Poland’s 3.3 million Jews were murdered, and after the war, when survivors returned to their homes, hundreds more were killed in antisemitic pogroms. Today, the Jewish population of Poland is less than half of one per cent of what it was before the war. The common visual stereotype of the Jew was born 2,000 years ago. In medieval art, the beard, hooked nose, and bag of coins were used to depict Jews as ugly, evil, greedy, and despicable – making them instantly identifiable often in places where no real Jews lived. This imagery endured when religious antisemitism morphed into racial antisemitism in the late 19th century. Across the world, in places like Poland, where real Jews once existed but no longer do, these imagined Jews live on.These objects were collected in Kraków, Poland in 2022. Known as Zydzi, “Lucky Jew” figurines and portraits of money-holding Jews are sold all over Poland and can be found in homes and offices where they are sometimes regarded as good luck charms. Despite Kraków authorities barring the sale of these figurines at stalls on city-owned land in 2021&nbsp;they are still widely available in souvenir shops and other stalls across the city. In this series, I have digitally manipulated my photographs of these figurines, flattening them and cutting them out so that they all float in the same square frame with a non-descript background. Through digital collages, I have distorted my original photographs of natural objects like plants, rocks, and stones I collected in the desert. The series focuses on animals as, since the Middle Ages, artists have visualised Jews as reviled creatures: ravens or toads to indicate greed, or with horns and beast-like features to signify the devil. Since this point, animal motifs have stayed popular in depicting Jews, from snakes and pigs to rats, vermin and parasites. The images combine different elements: my own photographs and photocopies of animal masks, self-portraits and stuffed animals are combined to create collages – abstracted to show how the image of the Jew has taken on a life of its own, fantastical and removed from reality. By focusing on the antisemitic gaze, the experience of being the outsider – othered and dehumanised – is explored. These are combined with text and archive images from key periods of history to demonstrate how the past continues to overlap with the present and the real-world violence it has led to. Inspired by my own experiences and the resurgence of antisemitism in mainstream society in recent years, the work asks us to reconsider anti-Jewish racism as not something confined to an isolated dark point in European history, but as woven into the fabric of Western society that continues to permeate our culture in subtle ways through conspiracy theories, tropes and images. &nbsp; have been linked to extremism, have now entered the mainstream. Their prevalence is a symbol of our so-called “post-truth society”, characterised by a lack of agreement over the nature of truth. The Fifth Generation looks into modern-day conspiracy theories linking 5G technology with the coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in the vandalism of at least 100 phone masts in 2020. The pervasivenss of 5G conspiracies are not just a reflection of our information environment, but also the technology that underpins it. Described as one of the most important innovations of our time, 5G represents our fear, confusion and helplessness in the face of the unprecedented technological shifts in communication we’re living through. Mirroring the rehash culture of conspiracy theories and the internet more broadly, The Fifth Generation employs montage and appropriation, combining found footage from the web, social media text exchanges and official reports with her own photography to interweave various perspectives – both true and untrue. natural world: on the one hand, it is a relationship characterised by control, ownership, exploitation and destruction. On the other, it is one of wonder and veneration, built from our myths and memories. The Covid-19 pandemic that entered our lives in 2020 has exposed this uneasy relationship. As normal life ceased and we were faced with the unknown, nature became a refuge and a comfort to many. But while nature was a source of solace, it also had another, darker connection to the virus. In June, leaders at the UN, the WHO and WWF International warned that pandemics such as coronavirus are the result of humanity’s destruction of nature: a manifestation of our dangerously unbalanced relationship with the natural world. The pandemic has not just shaken the idea that we can contain, control and reshape nature as we please but it has also revealed how bound up we are with all that is living on our planet.&nbsp; Part inspired by Simon Schama’s line – “Before it can ever by a repose for the senses, landscape is a work of the mind” – At Night The Salmon Move explores our double sided idea of nature; both dreamlike and nightmarish, the source of our fascination and our fears, alien to us yet inextricably linked to our fate. Focusing on texture, these images play on ambiguity and distortion to mirror our complicated relationship with the natural world and the broader contradictions between our internal and external worlds. Her work is research-driven and concerns the power and politics of narrative, mythologies, and representation.
